Stuttgart Main Station: first gridshell entrance unveiled
The first entrance gridshell of the new Stuttgart Main Station has been unveiled – a significant milestone in the realization of one of Europe's most ambitious infrastructure and architectural projects. The transparent, delicate structure made of steel and glass will form one of the four main entrances to the underground through station, spanning one of the distinctive special columns. As a translucent roof, it not only marks the entrance to the new platform hall but also mediates between the urban space and the station’s innovative spatial concept.
The gridshells are seamlessly integrated into the architectural ensemble of 28 light-filled column structures that channel daylight deep into the space through large light eyes. With their clear formal language and technological precision, they embody the design ethos of ingenhoven associates: sustainable, forward-looking architecture that achieves maximum impact with minimal material use.
